Somewhat obscured by the frivolity and humor of another Festivus was the fact this year marked a quarter-century since the Seinfeld episode “The Strike” first aired on December 18, 1997.
Twenty-five years later and people are still watching that episode and celebrating a made up holiday brought to the world via Seinfeld writer Dan O’Keefe, and aided by writers Alec Berg and Jeff Schaffer, not to mention actor Jerry Stiller and the other Seinfeld cast.
Will Festivus be celebrated in another twenty-five years? Probably, especially since it doesn’t show any signs of stopping. In fact, Festivus itself made it through the pandemic years and has instead become more main-stream in our society. Ten to fifteen years ago you’d have to explain Festivus to people, but not anymore it seems. A majority of people have heard about the holiday and are aware of its origins.
It’s a Festivus Miracle!
Let’s take a look at how some folks celebrated Festivus in 2022, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the holiday.
Get a Grip
Michael Burns, the former grip on the set of “The Strike,” was the person that mounted Frank Costanza’s Festivus pole to the floor of the set when the Festivus dinner scene was filmed. In a podcast interview a few years ago, Michael also explained how he thought the bed of lettuce beneath Estelle Costanza’s meatloaf was possibly done for camera contrast. Twenty-five years later he is sharing a Festivus meatloaf dinner with his mom. Another Festivus Miracle!
Mr. Blue needs a forever home
Cherie Flett Collins reported the pole was up and their Festivus was being celebrated with a foster dog, Mr. Blue from Texas Cattle Dog Rescue. Mr. Blue has no grievances to air. He is just hoping for a Festivus Miracle — to find his forever home.
Needs that label
All the rage in the past two years is an inflatable Festivus pole for the front yard. There is plenty of feedback about this inflatable, mostly around how it looks like something else. It is a good thing the manufacturer put a label on it, just to explain what it represents.
We drink it for its strength-to-weight ratio
Twenty-five years of Festivus has brought us many Festivus themed brews, this one called “Festivus Holiday Ale” by Full Pint Beer, one of Pittsburgh’s original craft breweries. Bottoms up!
Gemma and Festivus
Gemma explains the holiday Festivus, as written by Daniel O’Keefe, and popularized by the Seinfeld episode “The Strike”. Enjoy!
